PETER BELL

Executive director
Staff Member: 28 years of service

“I am extremely impressed by our memberships’ willingness to learn from one another, and the respect they show to all.”

“The Boys’Club, as it was called way back when, was a measuring stick for me and my friends,” said Peter E. Bell, executive director of the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Pittsfield. “It allowed us to test our skills in many ways – on the playing field, in the classroom or simply by socializing with others. Most important, the club showed us how much more we could be if we chose to work hard enough.”

After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of Massachusetts, Peter joined the staff of the Boys’ and Girls’ Club in 1982 as the Aquatics and Program Director and as Director of  Camp Russell. He was named executive director by the Board of Trustees in 1999. To Peter, the club remains the safe and inviting place it was when he was a boy.

“It allows our youth to participate in a wide variety of activities with their peers,” he said. “Sometimes, their peers look and think just like them. But more important, the club fosters interaction with peers who may look, think and act slightly differently. I am extremely impressed by our membership’s willingness to learn from one another and the respect they show to all.”

In the past decade, during very challenging times for the club, Peter is proud of the organization’s ability to not only maintain services to the community, but to expand them, as well.

“Very little of what we do could be accomplished without the efforts of many, many individuals,” he noted. “Our community has been and remains extremely supportive of our organization, and many people over the years have been deeply involved in its success. They are truly what make the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Pittsfield the special place that it is.”
