Scott S. Robinson, the former president of Berkshire Gas Co., became involved in the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Pittsfield more than 30 years ago when his own four children became members. “I was immediately impressed with the club as a first-class organization and got involved,” he said. “I was asked to join the Board of Directors in 1989.”
Helping oversee the facility is Scott’s main interest, and he has served as chairman of the Property Management Committee for nearly 20 years. “Obviously, with a 120,000 square-foot facility, it takes a lot of money to keep it up,” he said. “It's a sound structure and we want to make sure it stays that way. So, I'm at the club one to five days a week to talk, have a coffee, or just keep in touch. But I'm careful not to inject myself in the day-to-day operation; I'm not looking over their shoulders. The way I see it, I help bring expertise or personnel on board to make sure we continue to provide a safe and up-to-date facility for current and future programs.”
But Scott also has his eye on the overall mission of the club, which has been an anchor for community youth for more than 100 years. “It's truly heartwarming to see the kids mature as they come through,” he said. “You realize that if you give them just a little nudge in the right direction, they'll catch on.”
